¡¡ Analyze Case Two

Read the following excerpt of a rationale and try to find out in what way it can be improved. Please write your answer in the space provided.

Culture was once defined by Edward Tylor. According to him, ... The Primitive Culture by Edward Tylor (1871): ¡°Culture or civilization taken in its wide anthro-graphic sense, is that complete whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by a man as a member of society.¡±

People living in different societies, therefore, developed various cultures, which in turn affects their words and behaviors. For example, people in different cultures have different perceptions about what is beautiful. Everyone tries to pursue beauty. However, people in different cultures have different perception about what is beautiful. As far as literary effect is concerned, what is regarded as beautiful in one cultural community might turn out not to be so in another. The aesthetic preference interferes with the reading and interpretation process (Korzeniowska & Kuhiwczak, 1995). Therefore, the meaning that a translator intended to transfer will be constructed differently according to the different aesthetic preferences.

Language, as an indispensable tool of human communications, is one of the major carriers of culture. Idioms are often referred to as the ¡°cream¡± of a language, in which the culture underlying that language can find the best expressions.

In her An Advanced Practical Course of Chinese-English Translation, Xiong Jian states that ¡°idioms are a group of words used together in a rather fixed way to express certain meanings¡± (2004:11). Though generally considered quite informal, idioms are used quite often both in everyday English and in newspapers, magazines and other forms of media.
