Since the BA degree paper is expected to be written in English, no sentences or paragraphs in the body of the paper should occur in Chinese. For those direct quotations originally in Chinese, the researcher needs to translate them into English as illustrated in the second of the following examples.
Incorrect:
The advertisement action is an economic action; therefore, it’s a cross-culture communication. …“国际广告的翻译显然不同于其它文体的翻译,译者需具备语言、社会文化、民俗、美学、心理学、市场经济学、广告原理等多方面的知识,翻译时也须采用新的策略”(胡永芳,1988:42). … But there are differences between English and Chinese pronunciation.
Correct:
The advertisement action is an economic action; therefore, it’s a cross-culture communication. …“ Translation of advertisements differs from that of many other genres…(胡永芳,1988:42; translated by the author) … But there are differences between English and Chinese pronunciation.
If a Chinese word or phrase has to occur in an English sentence as an example, such as “The Chinese character ‘狗’ (gou; the dog) has a derogatory connotation in the phrase ‘狗急跳墙’ (gou ji tiao qiang; a concerned dog will do something desperate)”, it can be followed by its pi yin pronunciation and English translation in the brackets.
As to some names or book titles in Chinese, they can be presented in pi yin or if possible translated into English with the Chinese version put in followed the brackets. For example, “Mr. Ye Shentao (叶圣陶), as a famous Chinese educationalist said that …”, or "His article of On Translation (《谈谈翻译》) explicitly illustrates that …”. |
